What Is Feminine Energy? A Yoga Therapist Explains

Feminine energy isn’t something you earn or have to find, it’s already within you.

Feminine energy is the energy of creation, intuition, and receptivity — and it's already within you. You don't earn it, unlock it, or find it somewhere outside yourself. You reconnect with it.

If you've been feeling stuck in your head, disconnected from your body, or running on empty from years of overdoing and overproducing — that's not a character flaw. That's what happens when we spend too long in a world that rewards masculine energy (goals, logic, hustle) and gives almost no space to the feminine (flow, rest, feeling, cyclical rhythm).

I'm Joss Frank, a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) specialising in womb healing and feminine embodiment. In this post I'm going to explain what feminine energy actually is, why so many women feel disconnected from it, and how to start coming back to it.

Women are rhythmic, cyclical creatures existing in a very linear masculine world that does not celebrate the feminine

What is Feminine Energy?

Feminine energy is the energy of creation.

It's intuitive, receptive, compassionate, and cyclical.

It's connected to the rhythms of the natural world — the moon, the seasons, the tides — and it lives within every one of us regardless of gender.

In practical terms, feminine energy shows up as:

  • the ability to receive without guilt,

  • to rest without shame,

  • to feel your emotions without being overwhelmed by them,

  • to trust your intuition,

  • to move with your body's natural rhythms rather than against them.

The qualities of feminine energy include creativity, sensuality, compassion, surrender, and flow.

Its counterpart — masculine energy — is goal-oriented, linear, analytical, and action-focused. Neither is better. Both are necessary. But most women are living almost entirely in masculine energy, and it's exhausting.

For women who menstruate, feminine energy is felt strongly through the menstrual cycle — the natural ebb and flow of energy from ovulation through to menstruation.

For those who don't menstruate, feminine energy is accessed through the sacral chakra, the body's centre of creativity, sexuality, and emotional flow.

Embodying feminine energy helps you align with the qualities of surrender and acceptance versus clinging onto things that no longer serve you.

Why Do So Many Women Feel Disconnected From Their Feminine Energy?

Because we live in a world that wasn't built for it.

Western society is structured around masculine energy: deadlines, productivity, constant output, suppressing natural rhythms to fit into a rigid nine-to-five.

Women are taught from a young age to override their bodies, manage their emotions, and treat their cycle as an inconvenience.

Add to that the way feminine experiences — menstruation, menopause, sexuality, emotional sensitivity — are either medicalised, dismissed, or made shameful, and it's no wonder so many women feel like strangers in their own bodies.

Disconnection from feminine energy can show up as chronic stress and burnout, difficulty resting or receiving, pelvic health issues, low libido, feeling emotionally numb or overwhelmed, and a general sense that something is missing even when life looks fine from the outside.

Feminine energy is a major part of who you are therefore it’s never lost. It just requires daily nurturing to build a strong connection.

How to Reconnect With Your Feminine Energy

The most important thing to know is this: you're not trying to become something new. You're releasing what's been covering up what was always there.

Start slow. The nervous system needs safety before it can soften into feminine energy — you can't think your way there or hustle your way there. Here's where to begin:

Come back to your body daily

Even five minutes of slow, conscious movement or breathwork shifts you out of your head and into your body. This is where feminine energy lives — not in your thoughts, but in your felt sense.

Honour your rhythms

If you menstruate, start tracking your cycle and noticing how your energy naturally shifts across the month.

Rest when your body asks for it. This is radical in a productivity-obsessed world — and it's also one of the most powerful things you can do.

Release the resistance

The biggest block I see in the women I work with isn't that they don't know what to do — it's that they're in resistance to their own body, their emotions, or their femininity itself.

Somatic practices, womb meditation, and yoga nidra are some of the most effective tools for softening that resistance.

Build a relationship with your womb space

Whether or not you have a physical womb, the womb space (sacral chakra) is the energetic centre of feminine power.

Bringing gentle, loving awareness there — through womb meditation, movement, or breath — is where the real reconnection happens.

Frequently Asked Questions About Feminine Energy

What is feminine energy in simple terms?

Feminine energy is the energy of creation, intuition, rest, and receptivity.

It's cyclical, feeling-based, and flow-oriented — the counterpart to masculine energy, which is linear, action-based, and goal-focused. Everyone has both; most women in modern society are heavily over-indexed in masculine energy.

Is feminine energy the same as being feminine or girly?

No. Feminine energy has nothing to do with how you dress, present, or identify. It's an energetic quality available to everyone regardless of gender expression. A woman can be highly feminine-energy-led and also direct, strong, and ambitious — these aren't opposites.

Can you have feminine energy without a womb?

Yes, absolutely. Feminine energy is not dependent on having a physical womb. It's accessed through the sacral chakra — the body's energetic centre of creativity, sexuality, and emotional flow — which everyone has.

What blocks feminine energy?

Chronic stress, overwork, emotional suppression, shame around the body or sexuality, disconnection from the menstrual cycle, and stored trauma in the pelvic region are the most common blocks.

Nervous system dysregulation — being stuck in fight-or-flight — makes it almost impossible to access the receptive, flowing state of feminine energy.

How long does it take to reconnect with feminine energy?

There's no set timeline, but many women notice a shift within a few weeks of consistent daily practice — even just 10–15 minutes of womb meditation or body-based movement. The key is consistency over intensity.

What's the difference between feminine energy and divine feminine?

Feminine energy refers to the energetic quality of receptivity, flow, and creation.

Divine feminine is a broader spiritual concept that encompasses goddesses, archetypes, and the sacred feminine principle across spiritual traditions.

They're related but not the same — you don't need to connect with the divine feminine to work with your feminine energy.
